Established in 1969 by his Highness the Aga Khan, This Aga Khan Foundation’s International Scholarship Programme (AKF ISP) is an opportunity for outstanding students from specific countries*, who have no other means of financing their studies, to pursue postgraduate education.
The Foundation prioritizes requests for Master’s level courses, but it will only consider applications for PhD programs from exceptional students who have strong recommendations from their professors for doctoral studies and who require a PhD to achieve their career goals (academic or research oriented).
Award recipients are selected through a global, annual, and competitive application process. The AKF ISP offers a limited number of new awards in each cycle. To date, the AKF ISP has supported more than 1,000 students.
Eligibility criteria for the Aga Khan International Scholarship Program:

Bangladesh
Egypt
India
Kenya
Kyrgyz Republic
Madagascar
Mozambique
Pakistan
Syria
Tajikistan
Tanzania and
Uganda will only be eligible to study in Canada, France, Portugal and the USA through this scholarship.
Applicants must note that the Aga Khan Foundation Scholarships do not apply to universities in Germany, Sweden, Austria, Denmark, Holland, Italy, Norway, and Ireland for the 2023-24 application cycles.
Must have done a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training/professional experience
Students must have excellent academic records
Demonstration of genuine financial need
Construction of a thoughtful, reliable, multi-source funding plan
Strong leadership potential
Professional expertise, extracurricular, or entrepreneurial achievements
AKF ISP awards are structured as half grant and half loan – where you need to repay 50 percent of the award amount.*
Scholarships for Master’s studies are granted for the entire duration of the degree course.
For PhD students, scholarships are awarded for the first two years, after which you are expected to find funding from alternative sources.
AKF ISP prioritizes Master’s programmes but will also consider applications for Ph.D. studies.
Applications for part-time programmes and short-term courses are not considered; neither are applications from students who have already enrolled in or commenced their postgraduate studies.
